With a slogan of "What's Happening In Tahlequah, Greater Things to Come!" Suzanne Myers announces her intentions to run for mayor of the city of Tahlequah.
Myers was born into a military family with her father serving 22 years in the Air Force. Similar to most military families, they moved from air force base to air force base many times during her young life. She was fortunate enough to spend the 8th grade through high school graduation in the Altus, Oklahoma public school system. After high school graduation and a few years of working full time in Ft. Smith, AR, where her parents had relocated she enrolled and attended NSU earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree during her time there.
College was a wonderful experience and she met her lifelong friends during her time there and has so many great memories from being a student there.
Her immediate family was very small. Myers was an only child and had very few cousins or extended family members. Her college friends and sorority sisters have become her family for many years. Both her parents have passed away, but they were both extremley influential in her life.
As I have said before, our growth is here, it isn’t somewhere down the line, in the years to come. I look forward to gathering those who have expertise in defining the growth needed and working to ensure we are making progress in the areas which are so necessary and imperative.
I believe we need to evaluate the concerns many citizens have expressed in the “homeless” or “displaced” individual situation we have in Tahlequah. I think it is imperative the situation is evaluated and would like to explore the option of working with locals who have already done some evaluation of those living in our parks, etc, and to utilize the programs at NSU which would be best for this evaluation. I would explore the Social Work and Counseling programs at NSU to see how those students can gain practical experience and assist the professionals to determine the needs of these individuals. Once that evaluation is complete, I believe we can best lay out a plan to address the homeless in Tahlequah. If we don’t know what we are dealing with, how can we possibly implement a solution that is the most effective?
Let’s evaluate the communities similar to Tahlequah in size and location that successfully boost their economic development and bring new jobs and opportunities to their communities. We don’t have to invent the wheel in these areas, just learn from the successes of others, adapt and tweak those successes to our community. What benefits or perks are offered to businesses willing to build and relocate to Tahlequah?
I would like to see the addition of grant writers to increase funds available for street projects, fire and police departments and other unmet or underfunded needs. As I understand it, often grant writers are compensated with a percentage of the grant thus not deducting from the available funds to explore these opportunities for additional funding. It seems logical that our community would meet many of the criteria which will make us desirable for grants, easing the budgets of our departments and improving the ways they can serve our community and our citizens.
While at NSU she implemented Smart Choice Programs with five community colleges, 2+2 academic programs, the NSU Parent and Family Program, supervised all Recognized Student Organizations (average 85 groups per year), coordinated university-wide events such as NSU Family Weekend, Sorority and Fraternity Recruitment, Greek Life, Hall of Fame Selection, Homecoming (student side), etc, supervised cheer and dance programs.
Myers’ awards include the Community Impact Award Winner, Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, 2021, Grand Parade Marshall, Tahlequah Christmas Parade, 2021, Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce, NSU Centurion Recipient, and a Top Two producer at Century 21 Wright Real Estate in 2021.
Her current community service/includes establishing the "What's Happening in Tahlequah" FaceBook community group, in 2019, initially to help with communication during the Covid Pandemic, currently with more than 17,300 members, Northeastern State University Alumni Association Board Member, Vice President, former Events Chair; slated to serve at President of the Alumni Board, NSU Retiree Group, Founder and Coordinator of
Events, Member of the Planning Commission for the city of Tahlequah, Member of the Adjustment Committee for the city of Tahlequah, Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Director Member, Coordinated Tahlequah Community Wide Garage Sale, 2019/2020/2021, Coordinate community map of Holiday Lights, 2019 and 2020, Delta Zeta Alumnae, initiated fall 1979 and she serves as a mentor for all new real estate agents at Century 21 Wright Real Estate.
